If you’re an Aeromexico Club Premier or SkyTeam frequent flyer member you may be especially interested in checking out this first class flight review video.

Here are a few highlights of Aeromexico’s Clase Premier first class service on the Boeing 737-8 MAX.

THE ROUTE: Mexico City (MEX) Terminal 2 to New York City (JFK) Terminal 4. Flight time: three hours, 22 minutes.

THE DEPARTURE: Regardless of the class of service, it’s a good idea to show up early — especially nowadays, as pandemic travel requirements are constantly evolving, and you never know what the check-in situation might be like. I wasn’t able to check in online or us a kiosk, for example, so I had to wait in a short line to check in with a human at the ticket counter.

By the way, the Mexico City airport has onsite COVID-19 testing facilities, in case you need to get tested before boarding and haven’t already done so. I’ve always gotten tested before arriving at the airport, since I’m paranoid that it might be more stressful to test and await results on the day of departure. But I know other people who’ve been tested just three hours before departure and had no problems or delays.

Mexico City airport’s Terminal 2, which is a hub for Aeromexico, is the more modern of the two terminals, but like the airport facility is too small to serve the number of travelers that it does. A brand-new Mexico City airport is under construction outside of the city, but it’s much further away, and for now Aeromexico won’t even fly from it. If you can, it’s a good idea to access Aeromexico’s VIP lounge or else one of the other lounges in Terminal 2, so you can avoid the crowds. (I have free access to the HSBC Premier lounge because of my banking with that company, and it’s a nice little oasis with free food, drinks and workspace.)

Clase Premier passengers are among the first to board the plane, so I arrived at the gate early so I’d have plenty of time to settle in.

airline food on Aeromexico first class
Ready for breakfast? Airline meal in the morning in Aeromexico Clase Premier first class service.

THE AIRCRAFT: The Aeromexico Boeing 737-8 Max is a narrow-body, twin-engine aircraft. The first class cabin consists of four rows, with two seats on either side of the aisle.

The airline seating in first class had decent leg room and large setback entertainment screens. I also appreciated the extra storage areas; one of the covered armrest storage areas also housed the entertainment control console and headphones, as well as multiple charging outlets. A footrest made the seating area more comfortable.

Another nice feature: the tray table, which is stored in the other armrest, featured a handy flip-up piece that serves as a rest for cell phones and other devices so you can more easily view your own screen. That makes it easier to enjoy your own inflight entertainment if you prefer that over what’s offered on the seatback screen.

INFLIGHT MEAL: Aeromexico served us a full hot breakfast. I chose the omelette. Warm bread came from a separate basket, and I especially liked the cute salt-and-pepper shakers.

THE BOTTOM LINE: If you’re shopping for flights to Mexico and are looking for extra comfort and amenities, Aeromexico’s Clase Premier can be a good option — especially if you can get a free upgrade or use miles.
